Local People: Food
In the UK in the 21st Century we have become remote from understanding the source of our food. We have little experience or knowledge of growing fruit, vegetables and other crops; of farming and animal husbandry, food preparation and even basic cooking skills. Yet there are now more TV programmes and illustrated books about cooking than ever before, and TV chefs have become national and international celebrities. In our schools the curriculum for Food Technology is concerned with food and kitchen safety, healthy eating, achieving a balanced diet, and commercial food production, with only part of the timetable devoted to the home kitchen and how to create cost-effective, seasonal meals.
