their own individual projects
- Supports local community
and voluntary groups through art provision.
CAW was founded in September 1998 to provide "affordable and
accessible arts opportunities and facilities" for the people
of South Leamington and the wider community.
Incorporated in June 1999 as a not for profit company limited
by guarantee, and organised as a co-operative, CAW moved to
The Gallery on Avenue Road in May 2000, and has just
(November 2006) moved to The Workshop in Clinton Street
because of the uncertainty over the long term plans for
redevelopment of The Gallery site.
CAW is committed to an open door policy, working with the
most disadvantaged groups and individuals in the community.
The emphasis of the work is on a participatory approach with
a high level of authorship and ownership.
CAW encourages local people to initiate projects which are
relevant to the individual and which will benefit the wider
community.
Sustainability is another important aspect of the work, and
all of our projects reach beyond their immediate remit in
some way. Most desirable is for projects to eventually
progress from voluntary to paid status, so taking
disadvantaged and excluded individuals into employment.
CAW is a non-bureaucratic, non-institutional organisation
based on the belief that all art is participatory. Art forms
a living culture of which we are all part, rather than a dead
culture of which no one is part. It is through the language
of creativity and the human skills that we call art that we
can re-unite our divided society.
CAW works with a number of voluntary and statutory sector
organisations as well as the community in general. Partners
include Warwick District Council, Warwickshire County
Council, Regenesis, Advantage West Midlands, West Midlands
Arts, local CVS, Bath Place Community Centre, Council of
Disabled People, Leamington Sikh Centre, MIND, The Pupil
Referral Unit, Community Education, WAYC, African Caribbean
Project, Family and Friends, local samba band and many other
groups, and of course individual artists!
