The Gallery

The Grade 2 listed Art Gallery was built as an annexe to the Borough Library on Avenue Road when it was realised that there was no public place to display the artwork donated to the town. The cruciform shaped building was opened in 1928.  The town's gallery remained in this location until 1999 when all the items were then moved to the redeveloped Pump Rooms.

The external walls are without windows giving it quite an austere appearance, but once you step inside, the space comes alive, illuminated by a central glazed dome.  Each of the 4 wings has a barrel vaulted ceiling of which some panels were originally glazed to create top lit galleries although these are now covered on the outside.

Community Arts Workshop took over this space, referred to as The Community Gallery, in 1999 and now uses it as the hub of its activities.  The Gallery provides an excellent creative setting for the delivery of many of CAW's workshops and an ideal exhibition space for the art produced by CAW's projects.

The space is also available for hire by external organisations for events and exhibitions.
